Durham University academic David Campbell explores the effect of the Internet on the traditional news outlets in four parts. The third part concentrates specifically on photojournalism and how we might expect it to be funded in the future. David makes some excellent points, specifically:

News is not limited to newspapers, which have been in steady decline since the advent of television.

The means of distribution (web vs. print) does not necessarily dictate the quality of journalism.

Reminiscing on a past ‘golden age’ of journalism is useless – the parameters have changed, the outlets must adapt in order to survive.

I compiled a list of photography grants, competitions and internships in Google Calendar and thought someone else might find it useful. I’ll keep updating this as I find new competitions, but please do double-check deadline dates yourself. Please note that I’ve focused on international and UK awards. Also not included are competitions requiring hefty entry fees, unless the organisation is particularly prestigious.

When the current year’s competition has not yet been announced, I have used either the previous year’s date (if available) or January 1st as the deadline for me to check for updates. If you have suggestions for more grants and competitions to add, please leave a comment.
