Behind the Scenes: Rongrong Ren Fashion Shoot

I shot a winter clothing collection in the Croix Rousse district of Lyon last month for Chinese designer Rongrong Ren. The clothes are from Ren's collection Lost Red which draws influences from the Chinese cultural revolution and anti-Mao propaganda art in particular. The brief required a grungy and constrasty look whilst preserving the clothing details.

Photography Assistant Will Trampoline For Experience

Working as a photography assistant can present more than its fair share of surprises. Few jobs require you to jump ceaselessly on a trampoline. There ended the similarities between Yann Cucherat and I when I assisted commercial photographer Timothy Armes on a shoot last week. Yann is a world-class olympic gymnast, having competed in both the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics. He was also our model for the day, trampolining over and over in front 1-twist somersaults.

My trampolining, decidely less elegant, was enough for Tim to set his focus.

Here's a sneak preview of a fashion shoot I completed on Wednesday in Lyon's Croix-Rousse neighbourhood for designer Rongrong Ren. The clothes are a winter collection, influenced by the Chinese cultural revolution. The video shows the whole raw output from the camera during the shoot, before post-processing or retouching. More details to come with the completed shots.

Coverage of Espaces Latinos’ ‘Documental’ Film Festival

I had the honour of covering the Documental documentary film festival in Lyon earlier this month. The festival, organised by not-for-profit Espaces Latinos, presents a selection of Latin American documentaries over six days, culminating in an awards ceremony and a fantastic performance by Franco-Brazilian band Forró de Rebeca.

Axion Live #2 Electro-Dub

Axion Live #2 Electro-Dub Flyer
Flyer design by Adrien Rignol

I’ve been photographing underground dub and hip-hop acts for friends Axion Esti recently. They organise gigs regularly at the Toï Toï bar in Villeurbanne, Lyon, promoting some very talented local and upcoming artists.I love live music photography for both the surprises and the challenges it can present, not least working in low-light conditions trying to anticipate both the stage lighting and the musicians themselves.

Above is a photo I shot during the dub night, cleverly cropped from the original by Adrian for this flyer promoting for the next Axion event. I didn’t feel too enthusiastic about the original image but I’m really pleased with the way the lighting is emphasised here.

Don’t miss Axion Live #2 on March 27 at the Toï Toï bar in Lyon if you’re in the vicinity – expect some LOUD, quality, French electro-dub. See you there!
